About Brett

Bio

As a kid I always knew I wanted to play music. Driven by the gritty sound of punk, at 18 I started playing electric bass. The Cramps were my gateway to Rockabilly, which led to Reverend Horton Heat and the Stray Cats. My interest in Psychobilly came after that with the Meteors, Mad Sin, and Nekromantix, but also ventured into Folk, Bluegrass, and Jazz. I started digging back into some old stuff from the 50s, and around 20 I began to play the upright Bass. At 21, I joined my first band.

From 1999 to 2007, I played with Three Bad Jacks on their debut album Made of Stone (1999) then Crazy in the Head (2005) and the Hellbound Train EP (2002). We toured coast to coast and Europe playing in venues from the House of Blues to the Knitting Factory.

In 2008, I joined the Santa Cruz rockabilly trio, The Chop Tops. And for the next decade of my career, we played upwards of 200 shows per year and logged something like 30,000 miles on the road annually. I co-arranged the record Deadly Love (2010, produced by Kim Nekroman of Nekromantix) and re-recorded Evil Six Revisited. We toured nationally and internationally, including multiple runs across Australia where we shared stages with a humbling list of legends. I left The Chop Tops in 2013 but returned in 2025 for the band's 30th Anniversary reunion. We hit the road again and recorded Fabrikate, our first new album in over a decade.

Beyond my work with Three Bad Jacks and The Chop Tops, I have backed and performed with some of the founding names of American roots music including Robert Gordon, Joe Clay, and have filled in with The Rocketz, and The Hellbillys and various other bands.

My passion for music began with Dorsey Burnette from Johnny Burnette Trio, Kevin Smith from High Noon, Marshall Lytle from Bill Haley and his Comets, Lee Rocker from the Stray Cats and still burns today. I am currently available for session recording, live performances, and touring.
